Your Pet Parakeet’s Nutritional Needs
Parakeets are known as small but vigorous birds. These birds require a lot of stimulating activities because they are very keen in addition to being very energetic. These are the reasons why they require the best and the most balanced diet. These birds would also love to have veggies and fruits as part of their diet. From time to time, it would be great for your to have these pets indulge in nuts and seeds.
In fact, parakeets enjoy the same fruits that humans also enjoy. A few examples of these fruits are apples and oranges. If it is your first time to give them fruits, start giving them a slice and watch them ask for more. When you are feeding your budgie fruits you are having a bonding moment with it. You are not only feeding the little pet, but you are training him to trust you. The idea is the same with feeding nuts or seeds. And remember that they enjoy the taste of veggies, too. So, you may give the bird a bit of lettuce.
Your pet’s diet could use a lot of green vegetables. There are many parakeets that love the taste of kelp or mustard leaves. More often than not, feeding parakeets leafy greens is not difficult because they can easily acquire a taste for those food. It must be considered, though, that not all green leafy vegetables are good for your bird. Some leafy vegetables can trigger calcium deficiency or liver problems. It is best to consult with your pet’s vet on which leafy vegetables are suitable to your acrobatic bird’s diet.
When you are considering breeding parakeets you should think even more of its diet. In this period, female parakeets can use a mineral lick or a cuttlebone, which can be placed somewhere in the cage. Unhealthy chicks is the result of poor nutrition of female parakeet birds.
